[texts]Melting points of the refractory elements - I. Elements of atomic weight from 48 to 59 (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 10, 79-90 (1914) Scientific Paper 205 (S205))
The melting-points in pure hydrogen of the metals of the iron group, viz., Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Cr, also Va and Ti are determined chiefly by means of the micropyrometer which is shown to be an instrument of precision for the determination of the melting-points of refractory metals and salts. In the cases of the metals examined the effect of the alloying of microscopical particles with the Pt or Ir heating strip is found to be inconsequential until after melting, the melting-points determined for Ni, ...

[texts]On the constancy of the sulphur boiling point (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 7, 127-130 (1911) Scientific Paper 149 (S149)) - Waidner, C.W.; Burgess, G.K.
The authors have reinvestigated the boiling-point of sulphur, using a resistance thermometer of only 9 mm. length. They find that the temperature of the boiling-point is constant to within 0.05 degrees and probably even 0.03 degrees C., and the temperature is also reproducible within these limits of accuracy with care.

[texts]Melting points of some refractory oxides (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 10, 295-313 (1914) Scientific Paper 212 (S212))
The Arsem vacuum furnace previously used was slightly modified, and arrangements were made to sweep out the smoke from the heated oxides which affects the optical pyrometer readings. The materials as a rule are charged into the ring space between an outer and an inner tube; some gas (hydrogen, nitrogen, etc.), is passed down the inner tube, into which the pyrometer is sighted. The tubes are made of graphite or of tungsten, the latter being moulded in graphite...

[texts]Freezing point of mercury (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 13, 655-661 (1917) Scientific Paper 294 (S294))
The freezing-point of mercury was determined by means of resistance thermometers calibrated at 0 degrees , 100 degrees , and the sulphur boiling-point (444.6 degrees at normal pressure). Various precautions were observed to avoid errors due to impurities in the mercury, conduction along the leads, and the heating effect on the thermometers of the measuring current. The mean value - 38.873 degrees C...

[texts]Radiation from and the melting points of palladium and platinum (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 3, 163-208 (1907) Scientific Paper 55 (S55))
The authors give the results of experiments on the melting-points of palladium and platinum. These points were determined by three distinct methods. (1) The /b black-body method/ in which the temperature of melting within an electrically-heated iridium furnace is measured with an optical pyrometer. (2) The /b surface-radiation method/ in which the black-body temperature of electrically-heated ribbons of these metals is measured at the instant of melting...

[texts]Melting points of the iron group elements by a new radiation method (Volume Bulletin of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 3, 345-355 (1907) Scientific Paper 62 (S62))
The method used consists in heating a small quantity of the metal whose melting-point is to be observed on a platinum strip through which a current is passed. This is surrounded by a blackened brass tube with a mica window, and the sample is simultaneously watched by two observers through a microscope and an optical pyrometer. In the calibration of the optical pyrometer 1,753 degrees was taken as the Pt melting-point...
